India Vision Institute (IVI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Operation Eyesight Universal (OEU) in Hyderabad on 2 July 2013, in the presence of Dr. G. N. Rao, Chairman, LV Prasad Eye Institute.
Signed by Mr Vinod Daniel, CEO, IVI and Mr Kashinath Bhoosnurmath, Senior Director (India Programs), OEU, the MOU will facilitate partnership in eliminating avoidable blindness in India. The two organisations will explore opportunities to collaborate in developing targeted, sustainable and mutually beneficial vision care projects, including a capacity building of partner institutions offering optometry programs and courses.
This will include organizing training programs and designing and conducting continuing professional development projects for the human resources associated to these optometry programs. Based on specific project requirements, the two organizations would also collaborate in the process of purchase of equipment and vision care products necessary for the development of optometry.
Optometrists are clinicians who hold a very key role in the treatment of eye conditions and prevention of blindness. However, optometry is not among the much preferred careers in India and the uptake of optometry courses is much below the optimal level. India faces an acute shortage of trained optometrists as against the existing demand and the overall quality of optometry teaching in the country has enormous scope to improve.
On this occasion Vinod Daniel said, - “This Memorandum of Understanding will pave the way to upgrade and train the programs and staff of more than thirty institutions across India consequently improving the quality of eyecare service delivery and optometry teaching”. Mr Kashinath Bhoosnurmath said – “We believe the MoU we have signed is one small step in making a significant impact to bring quality eye care to the needy across India. Given our shared values, mission and partners it is but natural that we work together to eliminate avoidable blindness. We look forward to a long, mutually beneficial partnership with India Vision Institute”. Dr. G.N. Rao appreciated this collaborative initiative and assured of LVPEI’s continuous support to such programs.
Established in October 2011, as a Joint Initiative of the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI, Hyderabad) and the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI, Sydney), the Hyderabad-based IVI plays a catalytic role in achieving socially responsible, high-quality vision care; excellent vision care education; and international leadership in cutting-edge vision care research and development. Through its several initiatives, IVI has benefited/reached hundreds of eye care and optometry professionals since inception. (www.indiavisioninstitute.org)
