Campaign for vision screening 5000 underprivileged children launched at Avadi, Chennai

The India Vision Institute (IVI), in association with Ma Foi Foundation, today launched a campaign for vision screening 5,000 children from disadvantaged communities in Avadi, near Chennai.

The campaign will include a vision screening at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Avadi. Over 1,800 girls will be screened and free spectacles will be provided to those diagnosed with refractive errors. Similar screenings will be conducted at four other government and corporation schools in Avadi. The project is supported by the Allergan International Foundation through Optometry Giving Sight.

IVI CEO Vinod Daniel said, “refractive error is a major cause of vision impairment, including blindness. Eighty per cent of a child’s learning is visual. Proper vision is therefore critical for a child’s academic performance.”

“As a part of our Eye See & I Learn campaign, IVI has screened over 73,000 children for refractive errors. Over 5,100 spectacles have been provided to enable these children to get a good education and improve their quality of life.”

“IVI is happy to play a role in helping ensure a brighter future for these children, and we look forward to helping more of them in the future, through the Eye See & I Learn campaign”, Mr Daniel noted.

The Eye See & I Learn campaign is part of the global ‘Our Children’s Vision’ campaign. IVI leads the campaign in India. It aims to screen the vision of 10 million children in partnership with eye hospitals over 2016-2020.

The guest of honour at the campaign launch, Mrs. Latha Pandia Rajan, Co-Founder, Ma Foi group and Managing Trustee, Ma Foi Foundation, said, “the Foundation is pleased to partner with IVI in the program, which aims to provide better eye care facilities to underprivileged children in the Avadi constituency. I am confident that the students will make the best use of the screening programs and eye care services offered, which should lead them to perform well in academics and other activities in school.”
