Refractive Error in India
About 59% of adults and 7.5% of children have refractive errors.
Almost 500 million people need spectacles.
Over 250 million do not have access to a pair of spectacles, most of them urban poor or rural Indians. Refractive error is a leading cause of vision impairment in India. The prevalence of refractive error is 59% among adults and 7.5% among young (those below 16 years). The economic impact of Uncorrected Refractive Error is huge, with an estimated annual productivity loss amounting to INR 121,600 crores. There is a strong correlation between vision correction and productivity for adults. Wearing glasses can enhance productivity by 32% and increase worker income by 33%. Vision correction also significantly reduces accident risks and improves overall quality of life. On average, school children would learn twice as much if they had their vision corrected.

Vision Centres
Vision Centres play a vital role in providing access to primary eye care for urban poor communities in need. They offer essential services, including eye examinations, diagnostic testing, and affordable spectacles, to address the immediate vision health needs of underserved populations.
By bringing eye care services closer to those who may otherwise face barriers such as cost, distance, or lack of awareness, Vision Centres empower communities to take charge of their vision health and improve their quality of life.
Vision Centres also serve as a crucial link to more specialized care. Patients requiring advanced treatment or surgical intervention are referred to partner eye hospitals, ensuring they receive comprehensive care tailored to their specific needs. This holistic approach bridges the gap between basic eye care and specialized services, fostering healthier communities and reducing the burden of avoidable blindness and vision impairment among the urban poor.
